Extract Water Filter – a filter that fits Purist waterbottles and filters nasties.
Upsides:
– one bottle for all day if you pass water sources
– pretty much any water source is viable
– retrofits a common bottle
– light and small to carry before use
Downsides:
– fairly slow filtering speed, no big glugs
– fits only Purist bottles (it’s a common bottle though)

Initial use is a resounding positive. Simple to use, fits all my current bottles. Wondered if the filter could be longer / larger allowing quicker filtration volume.
Long term thoughts
After nearly a year of using the Extract filter, most of my initial thoughts have proved correct. The filter could do with being slightly larger / longer to ideally help increase flow rate when drinking. I ended up taking a bottle or two with me, and then when running low, I would use the Extract to fill one bottle with a standard lid, then fill the second and use the filter on that one – and fill the other non filter bottle again. Or, more often drink a larger amount when stopped by a water source.
I’ve filtered mainly from mountain streams or tarns – I have tried it from some pretty grotty puddles for the sake of research. I didn’t suffer any stomach issues or other problems – so the filter definitely works.

It’s tricky to know when you should stop using the filter – as it’s pretty impossible to keep a record of how many times you have filtered. I think the real strength of the Extract is to keep for longer trips or big days out, when you can use it to use water in places that are potentially unclean or riskier.
I liked the simple look and feel in combination with the Purist bottle, especially as it works with all my bottles. I think this could be the only downside, that it’s not universal. The upshot is that its possible to use with multiple bottles not just a dedicated one from Extract – the filter is available on its own, and with its own Purist bottle with the Extract logo.
